CKD Stage 2: Understanding eGFR 60–89 and Kidney Health
CKD stage 2 generally involves an eGFR between 60 and 89 together with evidence of kidney damage that persists. An eGFR in this range alone does not automatically establish CKD.
Stage 2 CKD symptoms
Stage 2 kidney disease (a mildly reduced eGFR of 60–89, alongside evidence of kidney damage) rarely causes noticeable symptoms on its own. Most people are told about it after a routine blood test rather than because they felt unwell — which is exactly why the accompanying urine test matters so much at this stage.
Why the urine test matters
Albumin or other evidence of kidney damage can be important when eGFR is above 60. Ask whether your urine ACR has been checked.
What should be monitored?
Your healthcare team may monitor eGFR, ACR, blood pressure and the underlying cause of kidney disease. Diabetes and high blood pressure may require particular attention.
Does stage 2 always progress?
CKD progression varies considerably. Some people remain stable for long periods, while others have changing kidney function. Your own trend and risk factors are more useful than comparing yourself with another person's experience.
