Exercise and CKD: Staying Active Safely With Kidney Disease
Physical activity can be part of a healthy lifestyle for many people with CKD, but the appropriate intensity depends on age, fitness, symptoms, cardiovascular health and other medical conditions.
Why activity matters
Regular appropriate movement can support general cardiovascular health, strength, mobility and wellbeing. It should be tailored to the individual.
Start gradually
If you have been inactive, a gradual increase may be more realistic than suddenly beginning strenuous exercise. Walking, gentle strengthening and other suitable activities may be options depending on your health.
When to ask for advice first
People with advanced CKD, significant heart or lung disease, severe anaemia, unstable blood pressure or other medical issues should ask their healthcare team what activity is appropriate.
Stop exercise and seek medical advice for concerning symptoms such as chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting or unusual weakness.
Diet and hydration
Do not automatically follow sports hydration advice if you have CKD. Fluid needs vary, and some people have fluid restrictions.
Nisarg Ayurveda can discuss complementary lifestyle practices, but exercise and fluid plans should take account of your medical circumstances.
