Kidney Failure and Dialysis in the UK: Understanding the Options
Kidney failure means kidney function has become severely reduced and the kidneys can no longer adequately perform their normal functions without additional treatment or support. This is also referred to as renal failure, end stage renal disease (ESRD) or CKD stage 5.
Does everyone with severe CKD need dialysis?
Dialysis is not started solely because of a particular creatinine or eGFR number. Kidney teams consider symptoms, biochemical complications, fluid balance and the overall clinical picture.
Types of dialysis
The main forms are haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. The appropriate option depends on medical and personal circumstances.
Transplantation
A kidney transplant may be an option for some people, subject to specialist assessment. It is not appropriate for everyone, and evaluation can take time.
What about conservative care?
Some people may choose a non-dialysis approach after discussion with their kidney team, depending on their health and preferences. This should be a shared medical decision.
Complementary wellness
Ayurvedic lifestyle practices may be considered for general wellbeing, but they should not be presented as substitutes for dialysis, transplant assessment or specialist treatment.
Nisarg Ayurveda can provide complementary consultation while patients continue to work with their NHS or private kidney team.
